An amphibious assault ship lands and supports ground forces on enemy territory. At 840 feet in length, it’s about 250 feet shorter than a modern aircraft carrier. It carries helicopters, vertical and short takeoff and landing aircraft, along with a crew of 1,200 sailors and 1,700 marines.
