Where did the nickname “Big Apple” come from?  Apparently, the name came from a New Orleans race track stable hand’s 1920’s reference, was picked up by NYC sports writer John Fitz Gerald (who lived in this area) and was popularized by a 1970’s visitors bureau tourism campaign.
