Built in 1766, St. Paul’s is Manhattan’s oldest surviving church building. Despite being located across the street from the World Trade Center plaza, it was not damaged on 9/11. For about a year after 9/11, it served as a sanctuary and refuge for rescue workers.

The staircase– now known as the “Survivors’ Staircase”– which originally connected the World Trade Center Plaza to Vesey Street was the last above ground remnant of the World Trade Center complex and was an escape route for many survivors of the 9-11 attack.  It is now part of the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
